The first All-American Georgia College golfer since joining the NCAA, McMichael was a two-time honoree in 1998 and 1999, earning the J. Michael Peeler Award his senior year for his total package as a student-athlete. He had a 75.9 stroke average and four top-20 finishes in 1998, improving in 1999 with a 75.5 average and five top-20s. He played on the first Georgia College golf team to advance to the NCAA finals in 1998. His top individual finish came that year on the biggest stage, as he finished third overall at the NCAA Division II National Championships as a sophomore. It was during McMichael’s sophomore season that Georgia College began its streak of consecutive years of qualifying for the NCAA tournament; a streak that still exists today. He was the first Georgia College golfer to play in two NCAA finals as the team qualified for the finals in both 1998 and 2000.
