MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The Georgia College women’s basketball team and head coach Maurice Smith are pleased to announce the addition of Belinda Claire Schaafsma for the 2011-12 season.
Schaafsma, a native of Momence, Ill. graduates from Bishop McNamara Catholic High School in Kankakee, Ill. where she played for head coach Jeff Bennett. She averaged 14 points, 8.3 rebounds, 2.3 steals and 2.3 assists per contest. Schaafsma is her school’s career leader in rebounds with 744, second in career steals with 290 and fifth in scoring with 1,219.
“Belinda comes from a very successful high school program,” said Smith. “She is a super competitor who knows what it takes to win. She is a very skilled player with the ability to play inside and out. Belinda is an outstanding addition for us.”
Schaafsma was a four-year varsity starter being named to the All-East Suburban Chicago Catholic Conference team three times, including player of the year in 2011. She was AP First Team All-State 2A in 2011 and Chicago SunTimes First Team All-State 2A in 2011.
Along with being a superb athlete Schaafsma finished with a 3.7 GPA, was selected to the National Honor Society, the Spanish National Honor Society and the Gold Honor Roll all eight semesters.
The Bobcats finished 22-7 with an 11-6 PBC mark. GC won the PBC Tournament Championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2007.
