MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – Rightfielder Shawn Ward’s (Martinez, Ga.) only hit of the contest was an RBI single in the 11th giving the No. 12 Georgia College & State University baseball team (26-11, 14-4 PBC) an 8-7 win over No. 20 UNC Pembroke (27-11, 12-9 PBC) Sunday at John Kurtz Field.

After giving up three runs in the top of the first, senior righty Martin Dewald (Mannheim, Germany) settled down and struck out 10 of the next 11 batters he faced throwing seven innings.

Eight different batters finished with an RBI for Georgia College and leftfielder Kyle Allen (Conyers, Ga.) had a team-best three hits and three runs scored, one of them being the tying run and another being the game-winner.

The Bobcats put up two runs in the third, fourth and fifth inning. In the third, Allen and fellow classmate Sean Harrell (Martinez, Ga.) hit back-to-back home runs.

In the fifth inning, Pirkle doubled to left center to score designated hitter Steve Muoio (Rochester, N.Y.). Senior first baseman Matt Pitts (Brunswick, Ga.) also scored on a safety squeeze bunt by third baseman Brett George (Dacula, Ga.).

Georgia College was down 7-6 going into the ninth, but managed to get the tying run when Pitts came through with a two-out laser-beam single to score Allen.

Allen started the 11th inning with a single and then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Harrell. Muoio sent Allen to third when he grounded out to second. With two outs and the game-winning run on the third, Ward stepped into the batter’s box without a hit on the day. Ward chopped a single through the left side to score Allen and give the ‘Cats the 8-7 victory.

Lawrenceville, Ga. native Ryan Tabor pitched four innings of relief to get the win (2-4). The senior righty allowed two runs and struck out three.
