#4 Bobcats Put Five on ABCA/Rawlings All-Region Team

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The No. 4 Georgia College & State University baseball team (41-16) landed five players on the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA)/Rawlings All-Southeast Region teams, with centerfielder Sean Harrell (Martinez, Ga.) and starting pitcher Martin Dewald (Mannheim, Germany) earning first-team distinction.

Dewald and Harrell took first team slots, while rightfielder Shawn Ward (Martinez, Ga.) second baseman Jason Veyna (Lamar, Colo.) and catcher Richard Pirkle (Norcross, Ga.) earned spots on the second team.

The team’s ace, Dewald is 11-3 this season with a 3.53 ERA and 117 strikeouts over 112 1/3 innings. This is the second ABCA All-Region honor for Dewald, after being named to the first team in 2009 as a closer.

Harrell is hitting .441 with 11 home runs and 55 RBI this season. He adds 79 runs with 20 stolen bases. He is slugging .700 with a .522 on-base percentage. The last Bobcat outfielder to take ABCA All-Region honors was centerfielder Justin Mills (2003-07) in 2007.

Ward is hitting .370 with 16 home runs and 86 RBI, scoring 55 runs while slugging .664. Pirkle is hitting a .359 clip, swatting 17 home runs and driving in 65. He has 15 stolen bases, slugging .750 and scoring 59 runs. Pirkle is the first catcher to take an ABCA All-Region spot for the Bobcats in program history.

Veyna is hitting .311 this season with four home runs and 46 RBI. He's scored 46 runs and stolen 13 bases with a .967 fielding percentage. He is the first Georgia College second baseman to make the ABCA All-Region list since Hans Stancil (2003-07) in 2007.

Dewald and Harrell move on to the All-America ballot. All-time, the Georgia College baseball program has now earned 50 ABCA All-Region awards.

The Bobcats are back in action Thursday, May 27 at 3 p.m. facing No. 9 University of Southern Indiana at the Division II College World Series.
