MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – Behind another great outing from sophomore Mike Guinane (Glenview, Ill.), the No. 3 Georgia College baseball team (8-2) took Sunday's contest from Pfeiffer University (5-7) 5-2. The victory helped the Bobcats take a three-game set from the Falcons.
Guinane (3-0) threw seven innings, striking out four and allowing just two runs on eight hits.
GC put up runs in each of the first two innings, as shortstop Tanner Funk (Kearney, Mo.) dropped a single to left to score leftfielder Josh Young (Lake Huvasu City, Ariz.) who doubled. Designated hitter Cody Maas (Alpharetta, Ga.) blasted his first home run of the season in the second for a quick 2-0 lead.
Pfeiffer charged back with a pair of runs in the third on RBI hits from Preston Lyon and Eric Shoemaker.
The Bobcats won the game in the fifth, as Ikaika Anderson (Austell, Ga.) led off with a single to center, eventually scoring on an error. GC added two more in the sixth, when first baseman Benton Yaun (Marietta, Ga.) led off with a double and scored on another Falcon miscue. Pinch runner Jim Moreland (Suwanee, Ga.) then capped the scoring, coming across on a bases-loaded hit batsman.
Anderson, Young and Yaun each finished with two hits and a run apiece.
Senior Tanner Moore (Thomasville, Ga.) got the final six outs for his third save this season. The loss went to Pfeiffer starter Eric Shuford (1-1), going 5 2/3 innings, allowing four earned runs. Lyon was potent at the plate, going 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run.
The Bobcats will play again Tuesday, Feb. 23, traveling to Valdosta State University (3-7). The Blazers most recently split with Nova Southeastern University in a doubleheader.
