#5 Bobcat Baseball Falls in Slugfest to #28 CSU, 11-9

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – No. 5 Georgia College baseball (18-5, 4-3 PBC) kept battling, but couldn't hold a lead over No. 28 Columbus State University (18-7, 4-3 PBC), dropping an 11-9 ballgame Friday night at John Kurtz Field.

A home run by designated hitter Cameron Scott provided the difference, giving CSU a 10-9 lead in the eighth. Scott took a 1-0 pitch over the right field fence to put the Cougars out in front for good.

In a back-and-forth affair, the Bobcats held the lead twice, after scoring three runs in the third, and after bringing a pair across in the fifth. But neither lead lasted long, as the Cougars had an answer at every turn.

Senior rightfielder Shawn Ward (Evans, Ga.) went 4-for-5 with four singles, scoring once and driving in a pair. Second baseman Luke McKay (Augusta, Kan.) added a 2-for-4 effort with a double, two runs and an RBI. Senior catcher Richard Pirkle (Norcross, Ga.) also tagged his team-best sixth home run of the season, good for second in the Peach Belt Conference (PBC).

Freshman reliever Matthew Robinson (Hull, Ga.) suffered the first loss of his college career (1-1). The righty tossed 3 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on four hits while fanning three. Cougar reliever Tyler Carpenter (3-2) went four innings, allowing two runs in the win, striking out six.

The Cougars got a 2-for-5 effort from Scott, combined with a 2-for-5 with three RBI and a run from rightfielder Eric Weiss.

The Bobcats complete the three-game set with CSU tomorrow, March 19 at 1 p.m. with a doubleheader.
