DUE WEST, S.C. – No. 19 Georgia College baseball (32-15) couldn't respond to another late surge from Erskine College (27-21) Monday, falling 7-5. The loss ends an eight-game win streak for the Bobcats.
The Flying Fleet put up three runs in the eighth, taking over a 5-4 game for a 7-5 win. Two home runs did the damage for Erskine.
Third baseman Travis Echols (Lawrenceville, Ga.) went 2-for-3 with a double, driving in two. Designated hitter Shawn Ward (Evans, Ga.) scored two runs, while shortstop Tanner Funk (Kearney, Mo.) also drove in two.
Bobcat reliever Walker McKinven (Lake Bluff, Ill.) gave up three runs in 3 1/3 innings, taking the loss (1-2). Fleet reliever Andrew Guest (7-3) got the win, throwing five innings with no runs, fanning 10. John Bolding got his second save, tossing a scoreless ninth. Shortstop Zach McCarthy was 2-for-4 with a home run, driving in two.
Georgia College is 12-9 in Peach Belt Conference (PBC) play, just one game behind Columbus State University in the PBC West.
The Bobcats are back in action Friday, April 29 at 7 p.m. to face the No. 14 Armstrong Atlantic (32-12, 14-7 PBC). The Pirates most recently swept Flagler College over the weekend.
