Georgia Colleges Pirkle Named to NCAA Finals All-Tournament Team
CARY, N.C. – Georgia College & State University junior catcher Richard Pirkle (Norcross, Ga.) was named to the NCAA Division II Finals All-Tournament Team this season. Pirkle was one of the 12 student-athletes selected to the team.
Pirkle went 5-for-16 over the five games, hitting .313 with a home run and a double. He also drove in two runs and scored twice. His two-run round-tripper in the win over the University of Central Missouri helped the Bobcats battle back through the loser’s bracket. He also started things off with a 2-for-4 effort against No. 1 UC-San Diego.
All-time, the Bobcats have had five players take NCAA World Series All-Tournament honors. In 1995, Will Collins, Kevin Dye, Chris Grady and GCSU Athletics Hall of Famer Greg Winters brought home the hardware as the then-Colonials took runner-up honors.
The 2010 Bobcats had a dream season, finishing 42-17, winning the Peach Belt Conference (PBC) Championship, the NCAA Southeast Region Championship, and advancing to the Division II World Series, where they finished third. Head coach Tom Carty was named both the PBC and NCBWA Region Coach of the Year. Outfielders Sean Harrell (2006-10) and Shawn Ward (Martinez, Ga.) joined starting pitcher Martin Dewald (2009-10) as All-Americans.
The GCSU Department of Athletics, back-to-back winners of the PBC Commissioner's Cup, sponsors 10 varsity athletic programs at the NCAA Division II level. As a Division II program, Georgia College prides itself on balancing the life of the student-athlete, evidenced by the Bobcats' multiple appearances in post-season competition as well as documented academic success and community-service involvement.
