GC Baseball Kicks off Fall World Series Friday

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The Georgia College baseball annual fall World Series, better known as "The Steak Series" begins Friday, Nov. 4 at 5 p.m. at John Kurtz Field. Assistant Coaches Dan Pirillo and Steve Moritz will each manage a team they put together at the Steak Series draft which occurred Monday, Oct. 31.

There was one trade made post-draft. Team Pirillo sent Seth Fleming to Team Moritz for John Welborn (Locust Grove, Ga.).  Assistant Coach Brandon Durden will be Moritz’s pitching coach while Matt LaMothe (Troy, Mich.) who is on rehab assignment from Tommy John surgery will run Team Pirillo's pitching staff.

Friday's contest will feature a pair of first-time Steak Series participants on the mound.  Senior transfer Derek McGowan (Raytown, Mo.) will start for Team Pirillo against Team Moritz’s surprise call of Freshman Trey Marksberry (Lawrenceville, Ga.).  Marksberry's fall has been strong, but this is a first time in Steak Series history a freshman will be named game one starter.

Pirillo is making his first Steak Series managing debut, while Moritz is trying to shake off last year's tough series defeat in six games by former Assistant Coach Jamie Ammons.  Affectionately called Ammo's Army, Ammons led his team to back-to-back Steak Series Championships.

This will be the Eighth Steak Series since its inception in the fall of 2004. Senior outfielder Patrick Daugherty (Kennesaw, Ga.) is the reigning Steak Series MVP, and a member of Team Moritz this season. Team Moritz also has the Bobcats’ returning All-American shortstop in Tanner Funk (Kearney, Mo.). Team Pirillo is highlighted by fifth-year senior Benton Yaun (Marietta, Ga.) and slugger third baseman Travis Echols (Lawrenceville, Ga.). All games are free and open to the public.
