MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The Georgia College baseball team (17-9, 9-5 PBC) pulled off a doubleheader sweep of Augusta State University (10-20, 3-11 PBC) at John Kurtz Field Sunday, taking games 7-1 and 7-6. A Taylor Hinshaw (Winder, Ga.) walkoff single provided the thrilling finish to game two.
Game one was dominated by the Bobcats, scoring one run in every available inning save the eighth.
Righty Justin Blue (Mulberry, Fla.) went the distance for the win (5-2) scattering six hits and three walks for just one run while fanning five.
Shortstop Daniel Bick (Alpharetta, Ga.) and centerfielder Mikee Moore (Dunwoody, Ga.) each tallied two hits and two runs. First baseman Clay Ardeeser (Loganville, Ga.) added a home run in the fifth, his fourth this season.
Game two saw the Bobcats jump out to 3-0 and 4-1 leads. ASU had three in the third and two more in the fifth to take at 6-4 lead.
A Jake Sandlin (Evans, Ga.) two-run double in the sixth tied the game 6-6. Setting the stage for Hinshaw's heroics, but they wouldn't have gotten there if it wasn't for reliever Jordan Brooks (Macon, Ga.).
Brooks (1-1) entered in the sixth, with the team behind 6-4, and the Jaguars having scored five runs over a three-inning stretch on two prior Bobcat pitchers. Brooks closed the door for his first career victory, allowing just two hits and two walks over four scoreless frames as the Bobcats headed to the bottom of the ninth tied 6-6.
After a fly out, Bick reached on a bunt single back to the pitcher. ASU reliever Clint Echols (0-5) slipped on the wet grass from yesterday's downpour, and still nearly had the speedy Bick at first.
A strikeout later, Bick stole second to give the Bobcats the winning run in scoring position for Hinshaw. After fouling off four straight with a 2-2 count, Hinshaw sent a pitch to right center, scoring Bick to end the game.
The Bobcats and Jaguars complete the three-game set with a single contest tomorrow, March 25 at 2 p.m.
