CHAMPIONS! Bobcat Baseball Takes PBC Tournament Title, 3-2
GREENWOOD, S.C. – Having come into the weekend without a Peach Belt Conference (PBC) Tournament win since 2008, the Georgia College baseball team (33-17) rattled off four straight victories to blitz the 2013 field and pick up the first PBC Tournament Championship in school history.
The Bobcats earn the PBC's automatic bid to the NCAA Southeast Regional Tournament later this week. No. 7-seed Georgia College beat No. 8-seed University of Montevallo (34-20) 3-2 in Sunday's title game.
Georgia College put runs up first, grabbing a pair in the third inning. Catcher Steve Hazel (Kentwood, Mich.) led off the inning with a walk, eventually coming in on a wild pitch for the 1-0 lead. Leftfielder Jake Sandlin (Evans, Ga.) also walked, and made it 2-0 crossing the plate on an error off the bat of Daniel Bick (Alpharetta, Ga.).
UM cut the lead in half in the fourth, a solo home run by Jackson Slaid for a 2-1 Bobcat advantage. Georgia College got its insurance run in the sixth, as third baseman Jeremy Donaldson (Winder, Ga.) ripped a clutch two-out single to left center to plate designated hitter Cody Maas (Alpharetta, Ga.), who also walked.
Montevallo got another run in the eighth on a wild pitch, but would get no closer.
Righty starter Matt LaMothe (Troy, Mich.) had not gone the distance in a Bobcat uniform in his two seasons prior to this week, but threw his second complete game of the tournament Sunday. LaMothe threw 136 pitches scattering four hits and three walks for just the two runs, fanning five. He improves to 8-4 on the season.
Bick was the only multi-hit performer in the pitchers' duel, going 2-for-4 with a pair of singles, as the Bobcats plated three runs on just three hits.
LaMothe was named PBC Tournament MVP, throwing two complete game wins. Sandlin joins him with a six-RBI contest against UNC Pembroke and nine total RBI over the four games. Righty starter Justin Blue (Mulberry, Fla.) also took a spot on the team, throwing a complete-game shutout over Francis Marion University Thursday.
The Bobcats will look forward to the NCAA Regional selection show tonight at 10 p.m. on NCAA.com.
