#32 Bobcat Baseball Splits with #1 Tampa
MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The No. 32 Georgia College baseball team (4-1) split a pair of high-scoring affairs with defending National Champion University of Tampa (7-1) Sunday at John Kurtz Field, dropping the opener 12-6 and evening it out with a 13-5 win.
Game one was a tight 6-3 contest until the five-run eighth. Georgia College scored three runs each in the fourth and eighth innings.
Rightfielder Jake Sandlin (Evans, Ga.) finished 2-for-4 with a pair of home runs, driving in four and scoring twice. First baseman Mason Colquitt (Norcross, Ga.) also swatted his first career home run, going 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI and a run. Catcher Steve Hazel (Kentwood, Mich.) also was 2-for-4 with a run.
Righty starter Justin Blue (Mulberry, Fla.) took the loss (1-1) going six innings and fanning four. Trey Oest (3-0) was the winner, going six innings himself, fanning seven and allowing three runs. Leftfielder Michael Danner hit two home runs in four at-bats, driving in three and scoring three.
In game two, the Bobcats jumped on the Spartans early with five runs in the first. Two came in on a Taylor Hinshaw (Winder, Ga.) double. The Bobcats got two more big runs on a home run by shortstop Daniel Bick (Alpharetta, Ga.) in the fourth, which was quickly countered by a five-run Tampa fifth for a 7-5 score.
The Bobcats used two runs in the fifth, and four more in the sixth to push the game out of reach. Hinshaw keyed the sixth with a two-run blast over the scoreboard in left center. He finished 3-for-4 with four RBI and a pair of runs. Bick scored three times and drove in two, combining his home run with a trio of walks.
Lefty starter Josh Taylor (Phoenix) went 4 2/3 innings for the win (2-0) in the seven-inning contest, allowing five runs, all unearned. John Clark (Duluth, Ga.) entered in the fifth and closed the game to pick up his first career save, not allowing a single baserunner.
The Bobcats are back in action Monday, Feb. 17 at 1 p.m., finishing off the three-game set with the Spartans.
