PEMBROKE, N.C. – The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) released the Division II All-Region Teams this week, with Georgia College Baseball (35-14) putting two players on the list.
Senior shortstop Brandon Benson (Loganville, Georgia) was named to the first team and took Southeast Region Player of the Year honors. Freshman third baseman Cal Gentry (Perry, Georgia) took a spot on the second team.
Benson is hitting .395 with 22 home runs, 72 runs scored and 78 RBIs, and is among the nation's leaders in the run-production categories. He gives the Bobcats two-straight NCBWA Region Players of the Year after Dylan Cook took the honors a year ago. Benson also becomes the third All-Region shortstop in program history through the organization, joining Daniel Bick in 2013 and Tanner Funk in 2011.
Gentry has been tough to keep of the basepaths, and is in the nation's top-10 in batting average at .442, the rookie has added 42 RBIs and 58 runs scored. He is the first Bobcat freshman and the first GC third baseman to earn NCBWA All-Region honors.
Since the organization's inception in 2009, Georgia College has now had 17 student-athletes named to the NCBWA All-Region list.
The Bobcats are back in action tomorrow, May 18 at 11 a.m., taking on Lincoln Memorial University in an elimination game at the NCAA Southeast Regional.
