LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) released the ABCA/Rawlings Gold Glove Division II Team Wednesday, with Georgia College rising senior centerfielder Logan Mattix (Loganville, Georgia) earning the nation's top defensive honor.
The honor is given to the top defensive player in all of Division II at each of the nine positions on the baseball field. Mattix becomes just the second Gold Glover in the lengthy history of GC Baseball, joining second baseman Dylan Cook (2015-16) from 2015.
Mattix did not commit a single error in 146 total chances this season. Mattix joins Columbus State University second baseman Grant Berry as Gold Glove members from the Peach Belt Conference (PBC).
Mattix's last error came Feb. 27, 2016 against then-No. 8 USC Aiken. He has gone 87 games since without committing an error, a stretch of 265 total chances.
The 2017 season was another great one for Georgia College, a 35-15 campaign highlighted by winning the 2017 PBC Tournament after going 16-8 in league play. The Bobcats were an offensive juggernaut, leading the country in batting average and runs per contest. GC Baseball put six on the All-PBC Teams, with Brandon Benson being named the PBC and Southeast Region Player of the Year. Benson and Cal Gentry were both been named All-Americans and were joined by Mattix on the All-Region teams as well.
The Georgia College Department of Athletics, two-time winners of the PBC Commissioner's Cup, sponsors 11 varsity athletic programs at the NCAA Division II level. As a Division II program, Bobcat Athletics prides itself on balancing the life of the student-athlete, evidenced by the teams' multiple appearances in post-season competition as well as documented academic success and community-service involvement.
