TAMPA, Fla. - Trailing by three in the top of the ninth, the No. 22 Georgia College Baseball team (3-2) plated two but couldn't get one more clutch hit, falling at No. 2 University of Tampa (3-2) 5-4 Saturday.
The ninth was a thriller, John Davis (Marietta, Georgia) and Mike Warren (Atlanta, Georgia) got the inning started with back-to-back singles. After a groundout moved the Bobcats to second-and-third, Logan Mattix (Loganville, Georgia) lifted a sacrifice fly to center for a 5-3 score. Wesley Wommack (Monroe, Georgia) followed with a two-out infield single to score Warren and bring the Bobcats within one. After a Tampa error put the tying run in scoring position, the Bobcat rally fell short.
Wommack led the hitting for the Bobcats, going 3-for-4 with the RBI. Davis had two hits in four trips, scoring twice, and catcher Brandon Purcell (Glennville, Georgia) was 2-for-5 with an RBI single in the first to put Georgia College up 1-0.
Sophomore righty Matt Studdard (Conyers, Georgia) was solid in the loss (1-1), allowing three runs in four innings. Junior Colin LoCurto (Kennesaw, Georgia) kept the Bobcats close with three innings of relief work, allowing just a single run.
The Bobcats close out the three-game set with the Spartans tomorrow, Feb. 11 at noon. Georgia College can take the three-game series with a victory.
