CARTHAGE, N.C. - The No. 2 Georgia College & State University golf squad took third at the 2009 Peach Belt Conference (PBC) Championship today, hosted by UNC Pembroke at Little River Golf Club.
Georgia College finished nine over par in the three-round event, firing a 289-287-297=873 on the par-72, 6,939-yard course.
All five Bobcats finished in the top half of the 40-man field, led by junior Pedro C. Lima (Sao Paulo, Brazil) at two over. Lima fell one slot to seventh, following a consistent 71 and 72 with a 75 today.
In ninth at four over, sophomore All-PBC pick Joe Young (Cochran, Ga.) joined Lima with a 75 in the final round, following a 73 and 72. Junior All-PBC Niclas Johansson (Skanor, Sweden) shaved five strokes off yesterday's second round 78 (70-78-73) to finish 13th at five over.
The third-place finish was the same as last year's take, as the Bobcats have won the PBC Championship just once, that victory coming in 2000. No. 15 Clayton State University won the team title at two-over (289-289-288=866), led by individual medalist Wade Binfield at six-under (67-70-73=210), bettering his teammate Will Wilcox and UNCP's Jordan Walor by just one stroke.
The Bobcats will await selection for the NCAA Southeast Super Regional Championship round, to be played at Robert Trent Jones of the Shoals in Florence, Ala. May 4-6. Selections will be announced in the coming weeks, with the Bobcats hoping to defend their 2008 Southeast Region Championship.
