#2 Bobcats Finish Fifth at NCAA Finals, Johansson in Top-10

BLAINE, Wash. - With a pair of golfers getting top-20 status, the No. 2 Georgia College & State University golf team finished fifth at the NCAA Division II Championships at plus-55 for the four-round tournament.

The Bobcats shot 301-289-301-300=1,191 on the par-71, 6995-yard Loomis Trail Golf Club course.

Junior Niclas Johansson (Skanor, Sweden) paced the Bobcats, taking ninth. He was nine over for the tournament, just five strokes off the National Champion's pace. Johansson bookended 74s around a 73 and 72 four his four rounds.

Sophomore Billy Shida (Berkeley Lake, Ga.) joined Johansson in the top-20 at 19th, 12-over par. He carded 77-71-73-75 over the four rounds.

The lone Bobcat playing in his first NCAA Finals was Pedro C. Lima (Sao Paulo, Brazil) at 37th. He slipped seven slots in the final day with a 76 (75-74-76-76). Junior Francisco Bide (Buenos Aires, Argentina) jumped 11 spots today, carding a final-round 75. That followed a 75, 76 and 80 in the first three frames.

Sophomore Joe Young (Cochran, Ga.) cut four strokes off yesterday's effort with a 77, (77-71-81-77) to take 55th overall.

The fifth-place finish is second-best in school history, matching the efforts in both 2001 and 1998.

No. 7 Cal State-San Bernardino and No. 6 Sonoma State University tied after four rounds for the team lead. No. 1 Columbus State University was three strokes behind in third, with No. 4 Barry University one more stroke behind in fourth. Gavin Smith of IUP and Ferris State University's Kelbi Lee finished the four rounds tied at plus-five. Both the team and individual races were heading into playoffs at press time.

The season comes to a close for the Bobcats, taking fifth at the NCAA Finals, the fifth time in the last six years Georgia College has played for the Division II title, all coming under head coach Jimmy Wilson. Both Johansson and Young earned All-Peach Belt Conference (PBC) status for the second-straight season.
