LAKELAND, Fla. - The No. 3 Georgia College & State University golf squad started the 2010 season in the best possible way, rallying from a 12-stroke first round deficit to take the team title at the Matlock Collegiate Classic, hosted by Florida Southern College. Junior Joe Young (Cochran, Ga.) won the individual championship at six-under par.
Held at the par-72, 7,065-yard Lone Palm Golf Club course, the Bobcats shot a 288 and a 284 in the final two rounds today, finishing one under at a three-round 863. The score was just one shot better than the host Mocs.
Young fired a second-round best 67 and finished with an even 72 after yesterday's 71 for his three-round 210. Second on the team was classmate Billy Shida (Berkeley Lake, Ga.) in seventh and seven strokes behind (73-74-70=217).
Senior Francisco Bide (Buenos Aires, Argentina) finished ninth, bookending a pair of 71s around a 76 for a two-over 218. Senior Niclas Johansson (Skanor, Sweden) rounded out the Bobcat top-10 finishers in 10th with steady improvement (76-72-71=219).
Freshman Taylor Smith (Mansfield, Ga.) also posted steady improvement over the three rounds, following yesterday's 79 with a 75 and 74 today, good for 43rd at 228.
No. 10 FSC was second at even par, with No. 1 Barry University in third at plus-three (867). J.D. Guinney of No. 21 Rollins College posted a 211, just one stroke behind Young for the individual medalist.
The victory marks the second team title of the 2009-10 season, as Georgia College started the season with a win at the Kiawah Island Invitational Sept. 8.
The Bobcats return to the links after a week off Monday, March 1 at the Richard Rendleman Invitational, hosted by Catawba College.
