MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – Junior Matthew Yonz (Waycross, Ga.) of the No. 2 Georgia College & State University golf team, was named GCSU Athlete of the Week for the week ending May 9. This is the first such honor for Yonz and the fourth for the Bobcat golf team this season.
Yonz had two of the best rounds of his career on his biggest stage, taking 14th at the NCAA South/Southeast Super Regional. Yonz carded a career-low 69 in the opening round, followed by a 76 in round two. Then, the junior jumped 30 spots by posting another career low 68 in round three, finishing even par at 213.
The tournament ended the 2009-10 season for the Bobcats, one featuring three tournament wins, including the 2010 Peach Belt Conference (PBC) Championships. Senior Francisco Bide (Buenos Aires, Argentina) was chosen PBC Player of the Year, with Niclas Johansson (Skanor, Sweden), Joe Young (Cochran, Ga.) and Billy Shida (Berkeley Lakes, Ga.) also taking all-conference honors.
