FLORENCE, S.C. – The No. 6 Georgia College & State University golf team led all three rounds of the 2010 SpringHill Suites Intercollegiate, clobbering the field by 18 strokes to take the team title at 16-under par, carding rounds of 280, 282 and 286 for the win. Thirteen of the 15 teams in this week's tourney compete in the NCAA's Division I.
Senior Billy Shida (Berkeley Lakes, Ga.) put up a field-low 70 today, finishing one stroke off the individual title. Shida finished eight under par (70-68-70=208). He was best in the field on par-four holes, averaging 3.83 strokes.
Sophomore Patrick Garrett (Kennesaw, Ga.) finished third overall at the par-72, 7,062-yard Country Club of South Carolina course, carding a 210 at six under par (67-71-72). Garrett was six under on par fives for the three rounds, averaging 4.50 on the longer holes.
Freshman Gavin Harper (Twin City, Ga.) took advantage of his first career start, bookending a pair of 71s around a 72. Harper finished sixth at two-under par 214.
Sophomore Bernardo Bide (Olavarria, Argentina) narrowly missed a top-10 finish, taking 11th at even par. Bide carded a 72-71-73=216. Freshman Victor Monte (Chantilly, Va.) finished 79th with a 242 (80-79-83).
The Bobcats beat UT-Chattanooga by 18 strokes, and third place Furman University by 22. The only other Division II program in the tournament, fellow Peach Belt Conference (PBC) competitor USC Aiken, took 10th.
Chattanooga's Chris Robb took the individual title, posting a 66, 69 and 72 for nine-under.
The Bobcats are back in action Sept. 27-28 at the Sandestin Collegiate Championship in Destin, Fla.
