PENSACOLA, Fla. – The No. 9 Georgia College Golf team rode low scores from a talented trio of seniors and are within striking distance after the first two rounds of the Argonaut Invitational Monday. The Bobcats are one stroke behind host No. 5 University of West Florida.
GC posted rounds of 298 and 287 for a 585, one off the pace set by the Argonauts.
Senior All-American Joe Young (Cochran, Ga.) is fourth, posting rounds of 73 and 70 on the par-72, 6,815-yard Pensacola Country Club course. Young is just three strokes behind tournament leader Ryan Black, a UWF golfer playing unattached.
Classmate Matthew Yonz (Waycross, Ga.) followed up a 76 with an even-par 72 and is four-over in 16th. Senior Billy Shida (Berkeley Lakes, Ga.) is tied with sophomore Patrick Garrett (Kennesaw, Ga.) at 23rd; both are at five-over. Shida was consistent with rounds of 75 and 74, while Garrett shaved seven strokes off an opening-round 78.
Getting his first career start for the Bobcats was junior Bayley Craig (Eatonton, Ga.). He posted rounds of 74 and 80. His opening-round 74 helped keep the team afloat, and was the second-best score on the squad.
The Bobcats are second of the 14 teams in the tournament, and are slotted better than No. 4 University of North Alabama, which is seventh. The Bobcats are also better than the three other Peach Belt Conference (PBC) teams in the field, as No. 25 USC Aiken is fourth, Georgia Southwestern State University is ninth and the University of Montevallo is 12th.
The third and final round begins tomorrow, March 1.
