Young Takes Tournament Title, #7 Bobcat Golf Third at Bearcat Classic
GREENWOOD, S.C. – No. 7 Georgia College senior Joe Young (Cochran, Ga.) shot a final-round 68 Tuesday to take the individual title at the Bearcat Golf Classic. Young's first title of the season powered GC to a third-place finish.
Young paired his 70 yesterday with today's 68, finishing six under par to win the individual championship by two strokes. The two-time All-American beat a four-way tie for second, including Carson-Newman College's Gavin Hay, Ben Lown of Newberry College, John McCurry of UNC Pembroke, and Ryan Sevigny of Queens University.
GC's 287 combined with yesterday's 289 for even par on the par-72, 6,800-yard Greenwood Country Club course. UNCP took top honors at two-under par, with C-N finishing second at one-under.
Classmate Billy Shida (Berkeley Lakes, Ga.) joined Young in the top-10, taking sixth at three-under with rounds of 71 and 70. Sophomore Patrick Garrett (Kennesaw, Ga.) was 36th, carding rounds of 76 and 73 for five-over par.
Sophomore Taylor Smith (Mansfield, Ga.) took the 46th slot, finishing at six-over par with rounds of 73 and 77. Freshman Gavin Harper (Twin City, Ga.) was a slot behind with rounds of 75 and 76, finishing 54th.
Playing as an individual, senior Matthew Yonz (Waycross, Ga.) was also seven over par posting a 74 and 77.
The Bobcats are back in action Monday, April 11 at the Peach Belt Conference (PBC) Championships in Savannah, Ga.
