GC Golf Stays in Nation’s Top-10
MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – As the Georgia College golf team and head coach Jimmy Wilson prepare to defend their 2010 Peach Belt Conference (PBC) Tournament title next week, the team has earned slots in the top 10 in two different ranking systems. GC is No. 8 in the Golf World/Nike Golf Poll, and owns the No. 6 slot in the GolfStat Rankings
The Golf World/Nike Golf poll is voted on by a select committee of the nation’s Division II coaches. GC is No. 8, with Chico State University taking the top slot. The Bobcats are tops among the five Peach Belt Conference (PBC) teams listed, ahead of No. 13 Columbus State University. Armstrong Atlantic is No. 15, with USC Aiken is No. 18 and UNC Pembroke in No. 21.
The GolfStat Rankings use a head-to-head formula to calculate the nation’s best teams, with GC in sixth. Chico State also leads this list, followed by the University of Central Oklahoma. The University of West Florida is third, with the Abilene Christian fourth and Lynn University fifth.
The Bobcats have 289.2 stroke average over their 10 events this season, good for three-over par. Senior Joe Young (Cochran, Ga.) leads the team with a 71.2 average, followed closely by senior Billy Shida (Berkeley Lakes, Ga.) at 72.5 and sophomore Patrick Garrett (Kennesaw, Ga.) at 73.2. All three have each won tournaments this year, as Young picked up the individual title at the most recent tourney for GC, the Bearcat Golf Classic.
The Bobcats are back in action April 11-12 in Savannah, Ga. at the PBC Championship.
