Bobcat Golf’s Young, Shida Named All-America

NORMAN, Okla. – The Georgia College golf squad added high individual honors this week, as Joe Young (Cochran, Ga.) and Billy Shida (Berkeley Lakes, Ga.) earned spots on the Division II PING All-America Teams. Young was chosen to the second team, while Shida received honorable mention status.

Young finished the season with a 72.0 stroke average, good for tops in the conference. He had four top-five finishes among his six top-10 slots, including a victory at the Lander Bearcat Classic. Young competed in 10 events and had 13 sub-par rounds. He becomes just the third golfer in the illustrious history of GC golf to bring home three All-America trophies, joining GC Athletics Hall of Famer David Robinson and four-time selection Niclas Johansson.

The Peach Belt Conference (PBC) Player of the Year, Shida finished the season with a 72.4 stroke average, good for second in the conference. Shida had four top-five finishes among his seven top-10 slots, including a victory at the Matlock Collegiate Classic. He competed in 11 events and had 15 sub-par rounds. This is the first All-America honor in his career.

All-time, GC has put 21 golfers on the Golf Coaches Association of America All-America Teams, all during the tenure of head coach Jimmy Wilson.

The 2010-11 season was another outstanding one for Bobcat Golf. GC put four individuals on the All- PBC Teams, with head coach Wilson taking Coach of the Year and Shida adding Player of the Year honors. The Bobcats had two All-Americans in Young and Shida and senior Matthew Yonz (2006-11) added Academic All-American accolades.
