MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – Freshman Ryan Trocchio (Norcross, Ga.) of the No. 15 Georgia College golf team was named Bobcat Athlete of the Week for his efforts in the week ending May 20, the GC sports information office announced Tuesday. This marks the first such honor for Trocchio and the fourth for Bobcat golf this season.
Trocchio led the Bobcats to the quarterfinal round of the NCAA National Championship this past week. During the stroke-play portion, he was six under par for the three rounds, shooting rounds of 70, 73 and then a final-round low 67. This play continued into the medal-match play round, as he topped CSU-Stanislaus’ No. 1 player Trevor Blair 71-74.
The Bobcats had a phenomenal 2011-12 campaign, winning an NCAA South/Southeast SuperRegional Championship without the benefit of a single senior. The region title was just the second in school history, and the Bobcats put three on the All-Peach Belt Conference (PBC) teams in Patrick Garrett, Trocchio and Taylor Smith. Trocchio added PBC Freshman of the Year honors as well.
The Georgia College Department of Athletics, two-time winners of the PBC Commissioner's Cup, sponsors 11 varsity athletic programs at the NCAA Division II level. As a Division II program, Bobcat Athletics prides itself on balancing the life of the student-athlete, evidenced by the teams' multiple appearances in post-season competition as well as documented academic success and community-service involvement.
