LAKELAND, Fla. – The Georgia College golf team finally took to the links to begin their spring season in the 33rd Matlock Collegiate Classic hosted by Florida Southern College at the 7,065-yard, par 72 Lakeland Lone Palm Golf Club. The Bobcats currently sit in a three-way tie for 10th after two rounds with a 22-over par 598 with the final round set for tomorrow.
Georgia College shot a three-over par 291 in the afternoon's second round, which was the sixth best among the 15 teams competing. It was a dramatic improvement from a 19-over par 307 in the morning's first round. The Bobcats find themselves tied for 10th with Rollins College and Valdosta State University heading into tomorrow morning's final round.
Senior Bryan Fox (Roswell, Ga.) had the best score in the first round for the Bobcats shooting three-over par 75. Senior Victor Monte (Chantilly, Va.) followed Fox with a four-over par 76, and junior Ryan Trocchio (Norcross, Ga.) shot a five-over par 77. Rounding out the scoring on the opening round was freshman Nicolas Falkinhoff (Buenos Aires, Argentina) with a seven-over par score.
The Bobcats picked it up in the second round with Trocchio shooting a two-under par 70, Monte and sophomore David Sullivan (Woodstock, Ga.) one-over par 73's, and Fox a three-over par 75.
Lynn University leads the field after the first day with a nine-under par 567. The three other teams under par include Barry University with a seven-under par 569, Armstrong Atlantic State University with a three-under par 573, and Nova Southeastern University with a one-under par 575.
The other five teams ahead of the Bobcats include Florida Institute of Technology (578), USC-Aiken (585), University of West Florida (588), Florida Southern College (589), and St. Edward's University (593). Barry's Adam Svensson tied the single-round scoring record with a 64 in the second round.
This year's field includes teams that have captured 21 of the last 25 NCAA Division II national championships. In addition to No. 11 Georgia College, 10 other teams in the tournament are nationally ranked including No. 1 Barry, No. 2 USC-Aiken, No. 3 West Florida, No. 5 Columbus State University, No. 8 Nova Southeastern, No. 10 Lynn, No. 12 Armstrong Atlantic, No. 15 Lander University, No. 19 Florida Southern, and No. 22 Rollins. Florida Tech, Valdosta, and St. Edward's all received votes, while Eckerd College completes this year's tournament field.
Originally begun in 1982 as the Imperialakes-Florida Southern Invitational, the tournament was-renamed in 1997 to honor its founder, former Florida Southern golf coach Charlie Matlock. Matlock led the Moccasins to seven national championships before his retirement in 1995. This year marks the seventh year in a row the tournament will be held at Lone Palm Golf Club, which opened in 1965.
