#14 Bobcat Men Fall to #20 Armstrong Atlantic, 68-60
MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. - An eight-game win streak came to a close tonight (Feb. 11) as No. 14 Georgia College & State University men's basketball (17-3, 11-3 PBC) dropped a 68-60 decision to No. 20 Armstrong Atlantic State University in the Centennial Center.
The defeat also ended a 9-0 stretch at home this season, including six wins during the aforementioned eight-game streak. Georgia College was led by senior guard Shaun Keaton (Albany, Ga.) who recorded 18 points as the only double-digit scorer for the Bobcats.
The top free-throw shooting team in the Peach Belt Conference (PBC) coming in at a .755 clip, Georgia College hit just 7-of-18, including a 0-for-5 effort in the second half.
The Pirates were led by four double-digit scorers, including a game-high 19 from Dwight Tolbert. Calvin Wilson added a 12-point, 12-rebound double-double, while Brian Moultrie and Uriah Hethington had 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Hethington stretched a second-half AASU lead to 11 with 5:16 left on a fast-break alley-oop, but the Bobcats responded. A Ken Kemp (Dublin, Ga.) three surrounded by a pair of Keaton bombs cut the lead to two at 56-54 with 3:30 left. Kemp finished with nine points and 10 rebounds.
Hethington responded himself with a turnaround jumper from the post, and the Pirates made 8-of-10 free throws in the final minute to preserve the win. The last Bobcat loss came nearly a month ago, a Jan. 14 68-63 edging at AASU.
The Bobcat loss puts GCSU in a three-way tie in the loss column with No. 9 Augusta State University and No. 15 USC Aiken for first in the conference.
Keaton now has 1,185 points in his GCSU career, passing both Ronnie Sims (1982-84) and Tim Northcut (1978-91) into seventh in school history. Keaton stands 123 behind William Northcut (1985-89) and sixth place.
The Bobcats will look to begin another win streak Saturday, Feb. 14 at 4 p.m. when they travel to Lander University (9-10, 5-8 PBC). The Bearcats most recently lost 80-53 at ASU tonight.
