PEMBROKE, N.C. – The Georgia College men's basketball team (10-7, 3-5 PBC) picked up its second-straight win with a big second half, downing UNC Pembroke (12-6, 6-2 PBC) 64-60 Sunday afternoon.
Down 24-19 at the half, GC used a big 45-36 second stanza to pull out the victory.
Senior forward Ryan Aquino (Roswell, Ga.) continues to impress, putting up 15 of his 19 points in the second half. Aquino made a pair of three pointers and added a team-high eight rebounds to the effort. Classmate Mike Augustine (Waterloo, Ill.) delved back into double-digit scoring for the first time since Nov. 26, tallying 16 points and six boards while going a perfect 7-for-7 from the charity stripe.
Down five at the half, GC stormed out of the gate, tying the game twice in the first six minutes of the second half. GC eventually took the lead for the first time on an Augustine three-point bucket, 33-32 at the 13:25 mark.
An 11-2 run in the middle section of the second half helped GC stretch the advantage out, as UNCP never held a lead after the 12:19 mark. A three-pointer by UNCP's K.J. Cooper cut the Bobcat lead to just three (63-60) with 10 ticks left, but Holmes pushed it out of reach with a free-throw on the other end for the 64-60 final.
UNCP held a slight shooting advantage of 38 percent (20-53) to 36 percent (20-55), but GC hit four more free throws (21-17) and caused 10 more turnovers (18-8) to pick up the win. The Bobcats got the victory despite zero bench points.
The Braves were led by Ben Jacobs with 13 points, adding 12 from Ty Alston off the pine.
The Bobcats are back in action Saturday, Jan. 28 at 3:30 p.m., playing host to Lander University.
