SUMTER, S.C. - The Georgia College & State University men's tennis team competed in its second tourney of the 2009 fall season at the ITA Southeast Regionals with six singles and three doubles teams getting in on the action. The duo of senior Joao Casagrande (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and freshman Jerome Leborgne (Coordimanche, France) is still alive after winning three matches in two days.
The pair breezed by Alexandre Queiros and Santana of Mount Olive College 8-1 in the first round. In the second round, the Bobcat twosome beat Pfeiffer University's DeWitt and Lawson 8-4. In quarterfinal action, Casagrande and Leborgne won 8-4 over Lander University's Levon Clark and Christopher Mattson. The duo will compete in the semifinal round tomorrow.
Sophomore Bobby Angelucci (Acworth, Ga.) fell in the first round to Juan Vallejo of Coker College 6-1, 6-7, 6-2. In the first round of consolation, Angelucci lost 6-3, 6-7, 10-4 to USC Aiken's Manuel Guglielmeti.
Senior Max Beliankou (Minsk, Belarus) lost in the first round to Peach Belt Conference (PBC) foe, Augusta State University's Henrique Boturao 6-1, 6-7, 6-0. Beliankou then fell in the consolation round to Hannes Ganss of Lincoln Memorial University 5-7, 6-2, 10-5.
Sophomore Leo Bernardes (Sao Paulo, Brazil) was beat by Lander's Henrik Willers 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 in first round action. In a consolation match-up, Bernardes blanked Coker's Ty Medlin in straight 6-0 sets, but in the second round of consolation play Bernardes was shut out 6-0, 6-0 by Armstrong Atlantic State University's Daniel Regan.
In singles action, Casagrande beat 14-seed Cese Grobel of Barton College 3-6, 6-4, 6-2. In the second round Casagrande lost to Francis Marion University's Karl Rogers 6-4, 6-2.
Leborgne fell to PBC foe, Flagler College's Pete Coulis 6-1, 0-6, 7-6 in the first round. Leborgne then went on to win in the first round of consolation action over Limestone College's Henrique Nordquist 6-3, 6-0. In the second round of consolation, Leborgne lost to Matt Lichtenstein of Wingate University 6-2, 6-3.
Senior Giovane Nucci (Santa Catarina, Brazil) lost in the first found to 13-seed, Nemanja Djuric of Columbus State University 6-4, 6-1. Nucci then got a bye in the first round of consolation before winning 6-2, 6-1 against Mount Olive's Queiros.
In other doubles action, Beliankou and Nucci lost 9-7 to Regan and Paul Fitgerald of Armstrong Atlantic. The duo of Angelucci and Bernardes won 8-6 over Limestone's Paulo Avila and Miguel Lopez-Zuniga. In a second round match-up, the twosome fell 8-3 to Nandor Solymosi and Travis Vanhoy of Lees-McRae College.
ITA Southeast Regional play continues tomorrow (Sept. 20) and Monday (Sept. 21).
