SAVANNAH, Ga. – The No. 4-seed Georgia College men's tennis squad (12-8) started of the NCAA Southeast Regional #1 with a bang, toppling No. 5-seed Francis Marion University (10-7) by a 5-2 score at Bacon Park. A win by Leo Bernardes (Sao Paulo, Brazil) in third singles clinched the team victory.
The Bobcats got the advantage early after a 2-1 doubles effort. Wictor Andersson (Karlskoga, Sweden) and Bernardes finished first with an 8-4 victory in the second slot, taking down Jack Bishop and Jonathan Hain. The Bobcat duo improved to 14-6.
Next, Tyler Franks (Greensboro, Ga.) and Alex Schubert (Frankfurt, Germany) nearly whitewashed Dirk Bair and Tim Ruepke 8-1 in the third slot. The Bobcats' newest doubles team improved to 2-1 with the victory.
Down big early, No. 9 Jerome Leborgne (Coordimanche, France) and Johan Wadstein (Helsingborg, Sweden) battled back, but the rally fell short 8-6 to No. 5 Alex Caspari and Gavin Davison in the first doubles slot.
Andersson was the first to finish taking down Ruepke 6-3, 6-0 in the fifth slot. Bair picked up the Patriots' second win 6-4, 6-3 in sixth singles over Franks, but it would be the best FMU could do.
Wadstein beat Bishop in second singles in a pair of 6-4 sets, setting the stage for Bernardes' winner. The senior beat Davison 6-4, 6-3 to put the Bobcats into the second round. Andersson improves to 8-1 on the year, Wadstein 14-5 and Bernardes 13-5.
The victory moves GC to the Southeast Region #1 Final, taking on host and No. 1-seed Armstrong tomorrow, May 1 at 2 p.m.
