Andreas and Wadstein Race to Finish Off Patriots, No. 4-Seed Bobcats Win 5-2
SAVANNAH, Ga. – With the Georgia College men's tennis team (19-6) holding a 4-2 lead over Francis Marion University, senior No. 48 Johan Wadstein (Helsingborg, Sweden) and junior Andreas Ainalides (Heusenstamm, Germany) both stood within points of securing a singles victory. Ainalides would beat Wadstein to the punch, downing Gavin Davison by a final score of 6-2, 5-7, 6-4. Wadstein finished two points away from defeating No. 15 Alex Caspari for the second time this season.
Wadstein and Ainalides fell behind early, quickly earning a 4-1 deficit against Caspari and Davison, the No. 15 doubles team in the nation. The Bobcat tandem surged into the lead with a 6-game win streak, taking the 7-4 lead. After the Patriots took the next two games, the Bobcats earned an 8-6 win.
The Bobcats took a 2-1 lead into singles play but would quickly build on that.
Andersson battled freshman Luke Bateup in the No. 6 slot and the senior Bobcat eased to a 6-2, 6-3 victory. Campus played close with Wahlier the entire match, but was felled 7-5, 6-3.
Hass earned a decisive victory over Heywood, 6-3, 6-2. The Peach Belt Conference (PBC) Freshman of the Year earned his 16th victory of the season, tying him for second most of the team, he also pushed the score to 4-2 on the day.
Wadstein and Schubert each had their matches halted as Ainalides clinched the victory and the berth into the final for the subregion.
With the victory, the Bobcats advance to the finals for the subregional tomorrow, April 29 at 10 a.m., they'll battle the No. 1 team in the nation, the Armstrong Pirates for the right to advance to the NCAA National Tournament.
