SUMTER, S.C. – Sophomore Mattia Campus (Concorezzo, Italy) nabbed a pair of wins in Sunday's action at the ITA Southeast Regional Championship, advancing to the finals of Flight B Singles.
At the start of the day, both Campus and freshman Kyle Kinsler (Suwanee, Ga.) were the two remaining Bobcats alive in the tournament play.
Campus met Fernando Espana in the quarterfinals, dropping the Newberry College player in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. Kinsler started his day with Francis Marion University's Richard Ashforth, battling back from losing the first set 6-2 to take the final two 6-2, 6-3.
A victory for each Bobcat meant they would meet in the semifinals. Campus got the upper hand early and closed out his teammate 6-1, 6-4.
The win puts Campus in the finals tomorrow morning Sept. 30 at 9 a.m. against Marius Wahlier of FMU. Wahlier had a three-set battle with Columbus State University's Michael Trebuhov in the semifinals today.
The meeting will provide a measure of revenge for Campus, as the men have met once before, April 28, 2013 in NCAA Regional Tournament action. While the Bobcats took the match 5-2 from the Patriots, Wahlier beat Campus at the five slot 7-5, 6-3.
