AUGUSTA, Ga. - The Georgia College & State University softball team (6-1, 2-0 PBC) opened Peach Belt Conference (PBC) play sweeping Augusta State University (4-2, 0-2 PBC) 3-2 and 4-3 in today's (Feb. 10) doubleheader.

In game one, a Jaguar run at the bottom of the seventh inning tied things up at 2-2 and sent the contest into an eighth inning where the Bobcats pulled ahead. Senior Mandy Chandler (Covington, Ga.) got the win tossing all eight innings. She struck out 11 batters, gave up four hits and walked seven.

Senior designated player Chelsea Wilson (Jacksonville, Fla.) led off the top of the eighth with a double, was bunted to third and scored on a single by third baseman Kori Pickowitz (Keller, Texas). Chandler gave up a one-out single in the bottom half, but stifled the rally there.

At the plate, Georgia College put up eight hits compared to Augusta State's four. Senior Kori Pickowitz looked strong, going 2-for-3 with two RBI. Wilson went 1-for-2 with two runs while classmate Tonya Medders (Bascom, Fla.) went 1-for-4 scoring one run. Outfielder Kati Pickowitz (Keller, Texas) was 1-for-4 at the plate with an RBI and second baseman Lindsey Swanson (Kennesaw, Ga.)  went 2-for-4.

The Bobcats also took game two 4-3 scoring three runs in the fourth inning. Chandler tacked on another win (5-1) in relief, throwing six innings while fanning six, giving up five hits and two runs.

Offensively, Georgia College had eight hits yet again. Kori Pickowitz continued to have the hot bat going 2-for-3 while outfielder Sherquita Bostick (Florence, S.C.) went 1-for-4 with an RBI. Junior shortstop Kayla Smith (Lexington, S.C.) went 1-for-3 slamming a three-run homer.

ASU had the tying run on first in the bottom of the seventh with one out, but Smith grabbed a fly and doubled the runner off for the final out.

The Bobcat home opener is Saturday, Feb. 14 with a doubleheader against Wingate University beginning at noon. Wingate swept the last meeting with the Bobcats in March 2008 1-0 and 3-0.
