by Katie Parker, sports information graduate assistant

INDIANAPOLIS - The Georgia College & State University softball team (31-22, 12-6 PBC) qualified for the 2009 NCAA Division II Softball Southeast Regional Championships, gearing up for its fourth-consecutive region tournament, as announced today (May 4).

Georgia College is one of 64 teams selected by the NCAA Division II Softball Committee to participate in the 2009 regionals. May 8-10 four teams will play at each of the 16 regional sites in double-elimination tournaments.

The Bobcats open tournament play May 8 in Hickory, N.C. as they take on site host Lenoir-Rhyne University (36-11). The winner then faces the victor of the USC Aiken (34-14) and Carson Newman College (27-15) contest May 9.

The winners of the four tournament sites will advance to the super regionals May 15-16. The NCAA Tournament Finals will be held May 21-25 in Salem, Va. at the James I. Moyer Sports Complex.

Georgia College finished second in the Peach Belt Conference (PBC) regular season rankings and enters the NCAA tourney armed with tournament experience and two All-Americans. The Bobcats have won the region tournament twice in program history, taking the title in 2003 and 2006. All-American Mandy Chandler (Covington, Ga.) was part of the 2006 team, which advanced to the championship game after beating Lenoir-Rhyne 5-4 in the 18-inning contest. Chandler fanned 23 Lenoir-Rhyne batters, claiming the NCAA Division II single-game strikeout record.

This season, the Bobcat ace has broken three PBC records including career wins, career strikeouts and single-season whiffs. The senior now owns the strikeout category in the conference books with single-game, career and single-season K's. Her classmate and fellow All-American, Sherquita Bostick (Florence, S.C.) has built quite a resume as well in her two years at Georgia College. She was named the PBC Player of the Year for the second-straight year, as well as taking a spot on the conference All-Tournament team yet again.

The last time the Bobcats faced Lenoir-Rhyne was during the 2007 season. Georgia College beat the Bears 2-1 in their first of the season at a tournament in Florence, S.C. LRU answered back later in the 2007 campaign sweeping GCSU 1-9 and 0-4 in a doubleheader. Georgia College also faced the Bears in the 2007 region tournament, shutting out Lenoir-Rhyne 1-0. The Bobcats lead the Bears 8-4 in the all-time series.
