DAHLONEGA, Ga. - The NCAA recently announced its Division II Softball Southeast Region Tournament Team, with four Georgia College & State University players earning slots on the squad. Pitcher Mandy Chandler (Covington, Ga.), third baseman Tonya Medders (Bascom, Fla.), outfielder Sherquita Bostick (Florence, S.C.) and designated player Kayla Smith (Lexington, S.C.) all added the honor.
Smith hit .500 (4-8) with seven RBI and three runs, swatting three home runs. Chandler posted a shutout win over No. 15 USC Aiken, and a total of 16 strikeouts over the three games. Bostick swatted a three-run home run in Saturday's loss to No. 25 Lenoir-Rhyne University, and Medders matched that feat in the USCA win.
The four honorees tied tournament champion Carson-Newman College for the most on the all-tournament team. LRU had three listed, while USCA took two spots.
The Bobcats went 32-24 in 2009, making their fourth-straight trip to the NCAA Tournament, all coming under head coach Ginger Chaffinch. Georgia College took second in the PBC Standings, matching its highest finish. Chandler set the PBC mark in single-season strikeouts as well as career wins and whiffs this season, and stands at 1,207, good for fifth in NCAA Division II history. The 417 this season ranks ninth in the NCAA Division II recordbooks.
