MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. - The Georgia College & State University softball team worked a split in the final day of action at the Charger Chillout today, falling 8-2 to the University of Arkansas-Monitcello before taking a 7-4 win from Maryville (Mo.) University. Sophomore first baseman Jessica Solomon (Douglasville, Ga.) blasted a two-run home run in the fifth, part of a 2-for-4 day.
The Bobcats fell behind early in game one, down 4-0 after three. Runs in the top of the fourth an fifth cut the UAM lead in half. GCSU took advantage of an error for their first run, as Allison Schwimer (Cumming, Ga.) tallied an RBI double.
UAM scored four runs over the next two innings to put the game out of reach. Haley Burnett (Columbus, Ga.) took the loss in 2 1/3 innings of work. Randa Perry went the distance in the win.
Game two was a solid team effort, putting up 10 hits and taking advantage of a big five-run third for the win. Down 4-0 again in the third, Smith followed a pair of hits with a bases-clearing double to get the scoring started. Parker followed with a single for a 4-3 score.
After a walk, Solomon ripped a double to the opposite field, plating Parker and tying the game. Belourse Jean-Francis (Naples, Fla.) doubled as well, scoring Schwimer, who walked for a 5-4 lead.
The ‘Cats tallied two more runs in the fifth, when Solomon took a pitch over the left field fence, the second home run of her Georgia College career.
Freshman Kristi Rodriguez (Marietta, Ga.) was the beneficiary of the fireworks, getting the win by tossing the final five innings of scoreless ball.
