Bobcat Softball Drops Two at #10 Augusta St.

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Facing their highest-ranked opponent of the season thus far, Georgia College & State University softball (11-26, 3-9 PBC) lost two games at No. 10 Augusta State University (32-10, 11-3 PBC) Monday, 5-1 and 10-0.

Senior second baseman Kayla Smith (Lexington, S.C.) supplied the team’s run, ripping a solo shot to left in the fifth. The senior cut the game to 4-1 at the time. Classmate Allison Schwimer (Cumming, Ga.) had the team’s other two hits, going 2-for-3 with a pair of singles.

ASU doubled a 2-0 advantage with two runs in the fourth. Freshman Kristi Rodriguez (Marietta, Ga.) took the loss (3-8), going 3 2/3 innings with four runs. Sara DeMuth (14-4) picked up the win, striking out 14 over seven innings.

Jaguar catcher Kristen Jones was 3-for-3 with a home run, two RBI and a run. Centerfielder Jessica Thornton was 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored.

Game two saw a seven-run fourth, taking a 3-0 game out of reach. The big blow was a bases-clearing double by Jones. Bobcat sophomore Haley Burnett (Columbus, Ga.) falls to 8-12 with the loss, allowing nine earned runs in 3 2/3 innings.

ASU’s Emily Corish improves to 13-4, allowing two hits over four innings of work. Thornton was 2-for-2, scoring three times and driving in a pair.

The Bobcats are back in action Wednesday, March 31 at 5 p.m., traveling to Columbus State University.
