GC Softball Splits Doubleheader at Queens

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Georgia College softball team (1-3) picked up their first win of the season Friday afternoon against Queens University (N.C.) 8-0, before dropping the second game of the doubleheader 7-5.

Junior pitcher Sabrina Chandler (Covington, Ga.) got her first start of the season for the Bobcats, earning the win in a complete game shutout.  She worked all five innings in the run-shortened contest, allowing just two hits and striking out as many.

GC really had it going offensively, pouring on eight runs in the first two innings of the game.  Junior Haley Burnett (Columbus, Ga.) led the charge blasting two home runs, driving in four and scoring a pair.  Fellow junior Maggie Davis (Roswell, Ga.) also chipped in two hits as she went 2-for-3 with a run.

A duo of freshman set the table for the 'Cats, as Alex Duvall (Douglasville, Ga.) and Whitney Okvist (Kennesaw, Ga.) combined to go 3-for-6 at the top of the lineup.

In game two, Georgia College was unable to rally back from an early 5-1 deficit.  Freshman pitcher Chelsie Huffman (Powder Springs, Ga.) struggled in her first start as a Bobcat, going just three innings while allowing five runs and walking four.

Burnett and Caitlin Duvall (Douglasville, Ga.) threw the final three innings, allowing a combined four hits and two runs.  Burnett contributed at the plate in game two as well, going 2-for-3 with a double and a pair of RBI.

GC rallied to tie the game at five in the top of the fifth, but a two run bottom for Queens proved to be too much to overcome, as Burnett (0-2) was saddled with the loss.

Following a poorly-fielded second game against Brewton Parker College Wednesday, Georgia College showed immediate improvement as they committed no errors in the pair of games tonight.

The Bobcats are back in action tomorrow, Feb. 12 at noon, traveling to Catawba College.
