Burnett Shines as Bobcats Split Two with Bearcats

by Matthew Dalby, sports information graduate assistant

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – Junior Haley Burnett (Columbus, Ga.) defined what a true utility player is Tuesday, excelling both at the plate and on the mound as the Georgia College softball team (6-18, 2-2 PBC) split a pair of Peach Belt Conference (PBC) games with Lander University (10-8, 1-3 PBC) at the Peeler Complex Tuesday.

Burnett (1-5) started the first game, picking up her first win of the season. She threw a complete game, scattering six hits while allowing just three runs in the Bobcats 4-3 victory. Burnett's impact was also felt at the plate, where she went 3-for-3 while driving in all four of GC's runs.

Her two-run single in the bottom of the sixth put the Bobcats up for good, as she closed the door on the Bearcats in the top of the seventh.

Senior Kati Pickowitz (Keller, Texas) enjoyed a solid game, getting a hit and a pair of runs. Junior Caitlin Duvall (Douglasville, Ga.) also scored a run while going 2-for-3.

Reigning PBC Player of the Week Anna Parker (Columbus, Ga.) continued to garner respect, drawing two walks to add to her conference-leading 19, while going 1-for-2 with a single.

In game two, the Bobcats trailed 1-0 early but roared back to tie the game in the bottom of the fourth.

Pickowitz led the inning off with a single and later scored on a sacrifice bunt from freshman Lindsey Conway (Madison, Ga.).

Unfortunately, GC was unable to hold onto the lead as Lander scored twice in the top of the fifth to hang on with a 3-1 victory.

Junior Sabrina Chandler (Covington, Ga.) (3-7) was the hard-luck loser, throwing a complete game and allowing just one earned run. She gave up four hits and struck out four.

Lander pitchers Amanda Hamby and Hayley Leissner limited the Bobcat offense to just four hits in game two, walking just one and striking out four.

The 'Cats will take their momentum from game one into this weekend, as they travel to take on Limestone College Friday, March 4 at 2 p.m. before heading to Spartanburg, S.C. for the Mid-South Classic March 5 and 6.
