GC Walks Off with a Win in the First, Drops the Second
MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The Georgia College softball team (9-26, 4-4 PBC) rallied in the bottom of the seventh to steal a game one victory from visiting Augusta State University (18-8, 1-1 PBC) Thursday. The Bobcats won the game 3-2, before dropping a closely-contested second game, 4-2 at the Peeler Complex.
Georgia College used two runs in the bottom of the seventh to get past Augusta State. Freshman Lindsey Conway (Madison, Ga.) led the frame off with a double to left center. Senior Brandie Monroe (Savannah, Ga.) reached base on an error following a successful sacrifice bunt. She would eventually cross the plate on another Jaguar error, scoring the winning run.
The Bobcats received an outstanding effort on the mound from righty Sabrina Chandler (Covington, Ga.), who went the complete game allowing just one earned run. Chandler struck out two Jaguars while scattering seven hits.
GC took the momentum from the first game into the second, tacking on an early run in the bottom of the second. Haley Burnett (Columbus, Ga.) belted her Peach Belt Conference (PBC) leading eighth home run to left, giving the 'Cats an early lead.
Augusta State would grab the lead 2-1 in the top of the fourth, before Georgia College rallied to tie the game in the bottom half.
Unfortunately, the Jaguars would score two more runs without a GC response en route to the 4-2 victory.
Burnett was the hard-luck loser for the Bobcats, allowing just three earned runs in seven innings of work.
The Bobcats will head to UNC Pembroke to take on the Braves in a crucial PBC doubleheader Sunday, March 20 at 1 p.m. The two teams currently sit in a tie for fourth place in the PBC standings at 4-4.
