Georgia College Drops Two at Brevard

by Matthew Dalby, sports information graduate assistant

BREVARD, N.C. – The Georgia College softball team (4-14) dropped both games of their doubleheader at Brevard College (9-3) Wednesday, both in tight contests. GC fell 6-5 and 5-3 to the Tornadoes.

In the first game, junior catcher Anna Parker (Columbus, Ga.) kept the Bobcats in it, going 2-for-3 with another home run, her fifth on the season.  She led the charge with two runs and two RBI.

Finding themselves down 3-2, Georgia College rallied for three runs in the top of the fifth to take a 5-3 lead.  Freshman Whitney Okvist (Kennesaw, Ga.) started the surge with a leadoff double, one of two hits on the day. She eventually scored on a single from Haley Burnett (Columbus, Ga.).  Third baseman Lindsey Conway (Madison, Ga.) would plate Burnett with two-out single up the middle to cap the inning.

Unfortunately, GC was unable to hold the lead as Brevard rallied in the bottom of the sixth with three runs of their own to take the game 6-5. Georgia College committed five errors, proving to be part of their undoing.

Burnett was the hard-luck loser, dropping to 0-5 on the season.  She came in relief of starter Sabrina Chandler (Covington, Ga.), who went 5 2/3 innings, scattering nine hits and three earned runs.

Brevard started fast in game two, jumping out to an early 3-0 lead.  After falling behind 5-1, GC would spark a little offensive comeback in the top of the seventh, scoring two runs to bring the game within two but not any closer.

Senior Kati Pickowitz (Keller, Texas) was the only Bobcats with an answer to Brevard starter Alyssa Miller (5-1), who threw a complete game six-hitter. Pickowitz went 2-for-4 with a triple, two runs and an RBI.

Freshman hurler Chelsie Huffman (Powder Springs, Ga.) (1-3) started for the Bobcats, spreading four hits and four runs over 3 2/3 innings of work.

GC will have little time to get ready for their first Peach Belt Conference (PBC) matchup of the season as they head back home to square off with Francis Marion University Saturday, Feb. 26 for a doubleheader beginning at noon.
