MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The Georgia College softball team (1-1) started the 2012 stanza with a split against Queens College (1-1), losing the first, 8-5 and taking the second 10-2. Haley Burnett (Columbus, Ga.) aided the Bobcats going 4-for-7, including a grand slam in the first game and a complete-game pitching performance in the second.
In the first game Queens jumped out to an early 5-1 lead after three, fueled by Kaitlyn Cheek's solo home run in the third. The Bobcats were not able to put anything together until they fell 8-1 going into the bottom of the seventh. Burnett came up with the bases loaded and blasted a grand slam over the center field fence to make it an 8-5 game. That was all the Bobcats were able to muster. Sabrina Chandler (Covington, Ga.) started the first game but only lasted three innings, giving up five earned runs (0-1).
The second game saw the Bobcats' bats come alive. GC's outburst saw five runs cross the plate in the first two innings. Kelsea Martin (Dacula, Ga.) went 2-for-2, driving in three and scoring three runs in the effort. The Bobcats put up four more in the fifth, eventually taking this one by the eight-run rule in five innings.
Burnett pitched all five innings in the second game, surrendering five hits and only giving up one earned run. Sophomore Whitney Okvist (Kennesaw, Ga.) finished 5-for-7 on the day, scoring five runs and stealing three bags. Dani Gallucci (Orlando, Fla.) finished 3-for-6, driving in her first two Georgia College RBI.
The Bobcats look to start a win streak tomorrow, hosting Catawba College on the final day of the Bobcats Bash set to start at 2 p.m.
