PEMBROKE, N.C. – The Georgia College softball team (20-14, 7-3 PBC) split another pair of Peach Belt Conference (PBC) tilts, winning 4-2 in the first and then losing in the second 9-1 at UNC Pembroke (14-17, 3-3 PBC) Sunday afternoon.
Sabrina Chandler's (Covington, Ga.) outstanding pitching performance found the Bobcats their seventh PBC victory of the season. Chandler pitched five solid innings, surrendering no earned runs. Freshman Erica Bell (Fayetteville, Ga.) picked up her team-leading third save of the season
Kelsea Martin (Dacula, Ga.) started things off for the Bobcats, singling in the first inning and picking up two RBI. GC scored two more in the fourth on a costly error by the Braves. Martin finished 2-for-3 with two RBI and one run scored.
In game two Haley Burnett (Columbus, Ga.) started things off for the Bobcats singling to centerfield, driving in Whitney Okvist (Kennesaw, Ga.) who finished 2-for-2 with two stolen bases. The tide would quickly turn when the Braves put a six spot up in the second inning. The Bobcats wouldn't be able to muster any more offense as the Braves added three in the fifth to end the game by run-rule.
Centerfielder Okvist stole three bases on the day, increasing her season total to 40, her career number at 64. After today's action, the now stands just six stolen bases behind Leigh Jacobs (1995-98) for first place on the all-time steals list.
The Bobcats are back in action Wednesday, March 21 at 2 p.m., traveling to No. 11 Armstrong.
