Bobcats Swept by #16 Pirates, 6-4 and 9-1

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Georgia College softball team (20-16, 7-5 PBC) was swept for the first time in Peach Belt Conference (PBC) play this season, losing 6-4 and 9-1 at No. 16 Armstrong (29-8, 5-1 PBC) Wednesday night.

The Bobcats fell down early, trailing 3-1 after the first inning. Whitney Galloway singled up the middle for the Pirates, driving in two to take the early advantage. GC would strike back in the second when Whitney Okvist (Kennesaw, Ga.) singled into centerfield plating two Bobcats. After a stolen base, Natalie Bellantoni (Oviedo, Fla.) picked up an RBI of her own, driving home Okvist. The 'Cats would see their lead slowly slip away, as Armstrong added one each in the fourth, fifth and sixth inning.

Sabrina Chandler (Covington, Ga.) pitched 4 1/3 innings, surrendering five runs and striking out two. Dani Gallucci (Orlando, Fla.) came in to close the game, throwing the final 1 2/3 giving up one run. Mikayla Sparks (Macon, Ga.) recorded the only multi-hit performance of the game, going 2-for-3 with a run scored.

Freshman Erica Bell (Fayetteville, Ga.) got the nod in game two but did not fare well against Armstrong, only throwing two innings and giving up four runs. Armstrong would strike for four in the third aided by a Heather Walker single through the right side plating two.

The Bobcats scored their only run of the game in the fourth when Natalie Lampert (Marietta, Ga.) hit an infield single, driving in Michl'le Hull (Stone Mountain, Ga.). Armstrong added four more in the fourth and one in the fifth for the run-rule victory.

Okvist stole one base on the day, increasing her season total to 41, and her career number at 65. After today's action, the now stands just five stolen bases behind Leigh Jacobs (1995-98) for first place on the all-time steals list.

The Bobcats come home for more PBC action Sunday, March 25 to play USC Aiken set for a 2 p.m. start.
