by Matt Dalby, sports information graduate assistant

COLUMBUS, Ga. – The Georgia College softball team (25-23, 9-11 PBC) finished off their 2012 regular season slate with a pair of loses to Columbus State University (36-18, 11-9 PBC), dropping the first game 3-1 before an 11-3 loss in the nightcap.

GC received another great performance from senior Sabrina Chandler (Covington, Ga.) in game one, going six innings allowing just three runs on six hits. Chandler struck out five and walked just a pair in the hard-luck loss, falling to 9-10.

The Bobcats only managed three hits in the 3-1 loss, but two of those came from senior and Columbus native Haley Burnett (Columbus, Ga.)

Burnett went 2-for-3 at the plate with a pair of singles, driving in Whitney Okvist (Kennesaw, Ga.) in the top of the seventh.

Georgia College made a valiant comeback effort in game two after surrendering four runs in the bottom of the first.

Burnett relieved went four innings in relief of starter Erica Bell (Fayetteville, Ga.), giving up three runs on two hits.

A Natalie Bellantoni (Oviedo, Fla.) double in the top of the fifth followed by a fielding error later in the inning led to three Bobcat runs to cut the score to 4-3.

Unfortunately, the Cougars plated three of their own in the bottom half of the fifth and four in the bottom of the sixth to grab the 11-3 victory.

The Bobcats currently sit seventh in the Peach Belt Conference (PBC) standings and lead Francis Marion University based on winning percentage for that seed. The top eight make the PBC Tournament this weekend.

GC will head return to Columbus, Ga. for the PBC Tournament set to begin Saturday, April 21. Seeding will be announced later this week.
