Burnett, Okvist, Martin Take spots on Daktronics All-Region Teams
MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The Georgia College softball team (25-24) put three players on the Daktronics All-Southeast Region Teams, the organization announced Monday. Outfielder Whitney Okvist (Kennesaw, Ga.) and designated player Haley Burnett (Columbus, Ga.) earned First Team honors, while Kelsea Martin (Dacula, Ga.) was on the Second Team at utility.
Burnett earns her second-straight First Team selection this season after hitting .347 with seven home runs and 41 RBI. The slugger broke GC’s career home runs record by smacking two in the Peach Belt Conference (PBC) Tournament loss. Her two appearances gives GC three Daktronics All-Region honorees all-time at DP.
Okvist makes her first appearance on an All-Region Team, hitting .413 this season with 52 stolen bases in as many tries, a school record. She scored 54 runs and drove in 19. Okvist is the fourth Daktronics All-Region outfielder for GC, the first since Sherquita Bostick in 2009.
Martin split time at both third and first base this season, hitting .314 with 24 RBI and 20 runs scored. She is just the second Bobcat utility player to earn All-Region, after Tonya Medders in 2008.
GC softball now has 13 honorees all-time for Daktronics All-Region, dating back to 2007.
Burnett and Okvist will now move on to the All-America ballot, with winners due to be announced May 14. Three Bobcats have earned Daktronics All-America accolades.
The Daktronics All-America programs honor student-athletes in Division II athletic programs. The voting, nomination and calculations are all conducted by the schools’ sports information directors.
The Bobcats showed much improvement in 2012, finishing 25-24 with a 9-11 PBC mark, good for seventh and a PBC playoff spot, after holding the top spot in the conference standings early in the season. GC put three players on the All-PBC team, adding the same three now at the all-region level.
The Georgia College Department of Athletics, two-time winners of the PBC Commissioner's Cup, sponsors 10 varsity athletic programs at the NCAA Division II level. As a Division II program, Bobcat Athletics prides itself on balancing the life of the student-athlete, evidenced by the teams' multiple appearances in post-season competition as well as documented academic success and community-service involvement.
