MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – Second-year Georgia College head softball coach Jamie Grodecki is proud to announce seven early signees for the 2013 season. The newest Bobcats all hail from high schools in the state of Georgia.
A pitcher and utility player, Erin Thorn (Johns Creek, Ga.) attends Johns Creek High, where she earned All-State from two different organizations in 2011. Thorn hit .427 with seven home runs and 24 RBI playing primarily third base. The 7-AAAA Region Co-Player of the Year, she also had 14 doubles and 11 stolen bases in 15 tries. A two-time All-Region choice, the Georgia Dugout Athletic Club Academic All-American plans to major in nursing.
Infielder Kristen Brooks (Brunswick, Ga.) hit .386 with six doubles, 10 stolen bases and 14 RBI for Brunswick High this season. She was a Wendy’s High School Heisman nominee, and earned First Team All-Region all four seasons in high school.
Marietta, Ga. native Marisa Boyette was signed for her work in the circle at Pope High. The all-time winningest pitcher in Pope High history, she posted a 1.74 career ERA. Named to the All-Region First Team in 2011, opponents hit a paltry .178 against Boyette last season. She was a member of the 16-uA Runners up at the ASA Nationals.
West Laurens High’s Abi LeRoy (Dublin, Ga.) joins the squad as a pitcher and utility player. The All-State First Team pick was also the AAA Region 2 Player of the Year, and runner-up for AAA Pitcher of the Year as a senior. In her junior season, she was named Region 4AAA Player of the Year, First Team All-State and was runner up for State Player of the Year while hitting .510 with 35 runs, 17 doubles, 21 RBI and 11 stolen bases. An honorable mention for both All-State and All-Middle Georgia in her sophomore year, she hit .472 during another All-Region season. The Region Pitcher of the Year as a freshman, she was added to the Georgia Dugout Club “Players to Watch List”. She plans to major in nursing. LeRoy joins batterymate Danielle Knight in the recruiting class for GC.
Catcher and infielder Lacey Najafi (Suwanee, Ga.) was a member of the 2011 Georgia Dugout Club All-State Team during her senior year at North Gwinnett High. The former All-Region and All-County pick led her team in RBI. She plans to major in physical therapy.
Becca Olson (Evans, Ga.) hit .462 for Evans High, driving in 30 and ripping four doubles. A three-time All-Region First Team selection, she pulled in a trio of All-County honors as well. Her squad advanced to the Elite 8 State Finals in 2008 and 2009. Slotted for an infield spot, Olson only struck out five times in 100 plate appearances.
Catcher Danielle Knight hails from Dexter, Ga. and played high school ball at West Laurens with fellow recruit Abi LeRoy. A four-time All-Region pick, Knight was named to the All-State First Team her final two seasons. In 2011, she hit .459 with 11 home runs and 54 RBI, scoring 46 runs and slugging .885. She was named the Region Offensive Player of the Year, as well as earning spots on the GADC and GACA All-Star Teams. Knight is the school’s all-time and single-season recordholder in home runs. She plans on majoring in pre-med.
The 2012 GC team hosts its season-opening tournament, the Bobcat Bash, starting with a doubleheader against Queens University Saturday, Feb. 4 at 1 p.m. Catawba College and the Peach Belt Conference’s Georgia Southwestern State University will also join the two-day event.
