MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The Georgia College softball team (26-12, 10-4 PBC) defeated their fourth ranked opponent of the season Thursday evening when they came away with a 5-4 victory over No.6 University of North Georgia (26-7, 6-2 PBC) in game one. In the second game the two teams were deadlocked 0-0 going into the sixth inning, but the Saints pulled ahead late and won 4-0.
Dani Gallucci (Orlanda, Fla.) continued her stellar season in the circle, as the senior scattered 10 hits, holding the Saints to four runs.
The Bobcats entered the bottom of the sixth inning trailing 4-3 after the Saints pushed a run across in the top of the inning. Gallucci reached base with two outs on a fielding error. Sophomore Kristen Humphries (Columbus, Ga.) followed Gallucci to the plate and deposited a letter high fastball over the outfield fence.
The homerun was the sophomore's second on the year and gave the Bobcats a 5-4 lead entering the seventh inning. The Saints would load the bases but fail to score in the top of the seventh as the Bobcats increased their winning streak to eight games.
Humphries knocked in three runs on the day as she also had a sacrifice fly in the fourth. The outfielder finished the day 1-for-2 at the plate.
The second game pitted two star freshmen, Marisa Boyette (Marietta, Ga.) and Courtney Poole, against each other. The two were locked in a 0-0 tie through five full innings.
The Saints got on board in the sixth inning and then three runs on a Kim McMillan homerun in the seventh inning.
Boyette and Poole combined for 17 strikeouts while only allowing eight hits and one earned run as each hurler lasted the full seven innings.
The loss ended the Bobcats eight game winning streak. GC softball has won 15 of the last 18 times they've taken the field. With the loss, Boyette snapped her personal streak of receiving a win in the last five times she appeared in the circle for the Bobcats.
The Bobcats now hold a 5-3 record against ranked opponents in 2013 with the Saints being their first win against a top-10 opponent.
The Bobcats will hit the road for eight straight games starting Saturday, March 23 when they travel to Savannah, Ga. to take on the No. 4 Armstrong Pirates.
