Late Inning Rally Comes Up Just Short, Bobcats Lose to Trojans 7-5

 

HICKORY, N.C. – Less than 24-hours after they defeated the No. 2-seed and host team, Lenoir-Rhyne University, the No. 7-seed Georgia College softball team (37-16) returned to the field to take on the No 6-seed Anderson University (39-13). The Trojans jumped out to an early lead and despite a late inning rally by the Bobcats, Anderson held on for a 7-5 victory.

The Trojans advance to the Championship round tomorrow, Sunday May 12 at noon, while the Bobcats will now play tonight, Saturday, May 11 at 7 p.m. The Bobcats will take on the winner of the University of North Georgia and Lenoir-Rhyne game starting at this afternoon, Saturday May 11 at 4:30 p.m.

The Trojans scored six runs in the first two innings, stringing together seven hits and three walks. The Bobcats got three runs back in the bottom of the second, putting the score at 6-3. The deficit remained three runs into the seventh inning, where the Trojans added another run on an RBI-triple.

The Bobcats entered the bottom of the seventh with a four-run deficit, but the offense quickly started to knock away at the Bear lead. Whitney Okvist (Kennesaw, Ga.) and Abi LeRoy (Dublin, Ga.) started the inning with back-to-back singles. Taylor Campbell (Warner Robins, Ga.) continued her hot hitting weekend, knocking in Okvist with yet another single. Kelsea Martin (Dacula, Ga.) gave the Bobcats four consecutive baserunners without an out recorded, as she reached on an error, LeRoy came into score on the play making it 7-5. The Trojans tightened down, recording outs on the next three plays to end the rally and hold onto the victory.

The Bobcats enter the loser's bracket and will face off against the winner of the Saints and Bears game tonight, Saturday, May 11 with a scheduled start time of 7 p.m.
