Bobcat Softball Team Wins Pair at Mid-South Classic Tournament
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Georgia College softball team (12-4) won a pair of games in the Mid-South Classic Tournament against Brevard College (7-6) and Carson-Newman College (13-3) Friday at Tiger River Field to up their winning streak to five games. The Bobcats first beat Brevard College 10-2 and then beat Carson-Newman 6-4.
In the first game the Bobcats broke open a one-run game in the fourth inning by scoring eight to build a 10-1 lead heading into the fifth. Brevard could only get one run in the bottom of the fifth which allowed the eight-run rule to end the game after five. A power outage interrupted the game for nearly an hour.
Georgia College got out of the gate fast with a big first inning highlighted by freshman Faith Flanders' (Dublin, Ga.) two-run home run. Flanders would also go the distance on the mound improving to 5-1 for the season.
Senior Whitney Okvist (Kennesaw, Ga.), sophomore Abi LeRoy (Dublin, Ga.) and freshman Carly Lewis (Seymour, Tenn.) led the way with a pair of hits each, while LeRoy, Flanders, and senior Whitney Horton (Acworth, Ga.) each added two RBI.
In the second game, the Bobcats headed into the final inning tied at four. Horton's double to leftfield scored LeRoy for the winning run and a sophomore Taylor Campbell's (Warner Robins, Ga.) single scored Flanders to provide the winning two-run margin against the Eagles. Carson-Newman has only dropped three games this season and two of those to the Bobcats.
LeRoy led the team with three hits, while Flanders and Horton each added a pair. Campbell's home run in the second gave the Bobcats a 3-0 lead, but Carson-Newman would get their first score in the bottom of that same inning and get three more in the sixth to tie the contest at 4 apiece.
Sophomore Marisa Boyette (Marietta, Ga.) and Lewis would split the pitching, with the former getting the win and the latter being credited with a save.
Georgia College has a pair of games Saturday in Spartanburg starting at 10 a.m. against Lincoln Memorial University and concluding with a 4 p.m. start against Lenoir-Rhyne University
